Got some musty "end of winter" smells in the house? Crush some aromatic leaves--eucalyptus leaves work GREAT- and crushed in your hands---rub on your filter inside your "catch" basin of your vacumn cleaner and drop into the basin, works terrific to spread a pleasant smell throughout the room! Change your leaves before you vacumn each time.

Some books that start smelling musty can be freshened if you put a dryer softener sheet between the pages for a few days-NOT TO BE USED ON VALUABLE BOOKS THOUGH!! the sheets might stain..

Worried about using so much bleach around your kitchen?? Remember what our grandmothers used in their kitchens--plain old vinegar--does the same job, cheaper, safer....and to me, the smell is much better to tolerate than bleach..see link below:

If you own a jacuzzi or whirlpool tub, fill with cold water, and add a half bottle of dishwasher soap and run the jets for an hour--the enzymes in the soap help clean the tub, and the low-sudsing action means you won't have a floor full of bubbles!

Helpful Hints from my cousin in Oklahoma!!

EVA.

Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't have to pick the little
"stringy things" off of it. That's how the primates do it.  ( my note* Jerry tried this it this morning)

Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave
Them connected at the stem, they ripen faster. (will have to try this)

Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh
Much longer and not mold!

Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating.
Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.

Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the
Grease away from the meat while cooking.

To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of spoonfuls of
Sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up.

For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in
Double broiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty
 Frosting.

Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and
At the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.

Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make a delicious dessert. Simple
Chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Place
Them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over the apples. Bake
At 350 for 15 minutes!!! Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream.

1. Reheat Pizza
Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set
Heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No
Soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.

( yep I've done this one & it works)

 2. Easy Deviled Eggs
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all
Broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up
Mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg.
Just throw bag away when done easy clean up.
(will have to try this)

 3. Expanding Frosting
When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with
Your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to
Frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar
 And calories per serving.

 4. Reheating refrigerated bread
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place
Them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will
Keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.

 5. Newspaper weeds away
Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet
Newspapers put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with
Mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening
Plastic they will not get through wet newspapers.
(will have to try this)

 6. Broken Glass
Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you
 Can't see easily.

 7. No More Mosquitoes
Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.

(we've done this, it helps, but you need more than one dryer sheet for Oklahoma mosquito's)

 8. Squirrel Away!
To keep squirrels from eating your plants sprinkle your plants with
Cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and the
 Squirrels won't come near it.

 9. Flexible vacuum
To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an
Empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be
Bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.

 10. Reducing Static Cling
Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a
Clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when
Wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and -- at DA! -- static
 Is gone.

 11. Measuring Cups
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot
Water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your
Ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right
Out.

 12. Foggy Windshield?
Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the
Glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works
 Better than a cloth!

 13. Reopening envelope
If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include
Something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an
Hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily.

 14. Conditioner
Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than
Shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way
To use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it
 In your hair...

 15. Goodbye Fruit Flies
To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill it 1/2" with
Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid, mix well. You
will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!

 16. Get Rid of Ants
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it
"home," can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so,
especially if it rains, but it works & you don't have the worry about pets
 or small children being harmed!

 17. INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS
The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things
around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and
he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was
clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load clothes.)
He told us that he wanted to show us something; he took the filter over
to the sink, ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh
material - I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like.
well,...the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn't go through
it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh
that's what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film, but it's
there. It's what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and
static free -- that nice fragrance too, you know how they can feel waxy
when you take them out of the box, well t his stuff builds up on your
clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to
catch fire & potentially burn your house down with it! He said the best
way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (& to keep your
electric bill lower) is to take that filter out & wash it with hot soapy
water & an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He
said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long!
How about that!?! Learn something new everyday! I certainly didn't know
dryer sheets would do that. So, I thought I'd share!

(Make sure the screen is DRY before putting it back in the dryer.)

( yep I've done this one & it works)

Note: I went to my dryer & tested my screen by running water on it. The
water ran through a little bit but mostly collected all the water in
the mesh screen. I washed it with warm soapy water & a nylon brush & I
had it done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it the water ran right
Thru the screen! There wasn't any puddling at all!  That repairman knew
 what he was talking about!

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK.
NOT ONLY COULD IT SAVE SOMEONE'S HOME, BUT IT COULD SAVE
SOMEONE'S LIFE.

I hope you find these tips useful

This was a family favorite when I was growing up, but mom would rub it on our chests to helps us breathe through the congestion.  Very interested in seeing if this idea to control coughing works too!

VICKS VAPORUB

I wish I'd known this when my family was young during winter colds and coughs. I am going to try it myself. Share with young parents.

Isn't life strange. When we had a lecture on Essential Oils, they told us how the foot soles can absorb oils. Their example: Put garlic on your feet and within 20 minutes you can 'taste' it.

Some of us have used Vicks Vaporub for years for everything from chapped lips to sore toes and many body parts in between. But I've never heard of this. And don't laugh, it works 100% of the time although the scientists at the Canada Research council (who discovered it) aren't sure why.

To stop night time coughing in a child (or adult as we found out personally), put Vicks Vaporub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime, then cover with socks . Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly. I heard the head of the Canada Research Council describe these findings on the part of their scientists when they were investigating the effectiveness and usage of prescription cough medicines in children as compared to alternative therapies like acupressure.

Just happened to tune in A.M.Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good due to the chemical makeup of these strong Drugs so, I listened. It was a surprise finding and found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, in addition to have a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly. Polly tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%! She said that it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a few minutes and believe me, this was a deep, (incredibly annoying!) every few seconds uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough-free for hours every night that she used it. If you have grandchildren, pass it on. If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed by the effect.

Our grandson Zach reacts to mosquito/ insect bites very badly--like several other of our family--he's very sensitive. Some several weeks ago our daughter Aya had given me a couple of packets of Benadryl Allergy Quick Dissolve Strips that she had several of. At the Jenness Park where Zena was getting babtized, Zach and Ralph were fishing and Zach got a whopper of a bite on his arm---near-instant swelling and itching...since Benadryl works on the insides for allergies, I got the idea to put a tiny spot of one of the strips on the bite--had him put some of his spit on the bite, and tore a piece off the main strip and put it on....

He kept it on during the next hour, and the swelling was down!!! And I mean ALOT!!!! and the itching was gone!!!

Ralph had a bite this morning and tried the same trick--same results!! Itching gone and only a small red area where the bite was!!!!

So by all means get this product if you can...keep them handy, keep them in your first aid kits....

And pass along the news!!

Eva

For pets who are going blind:

punch 2 holes in their collar and run a rubber band through both holes, tying band so it has 2 little loops sticking up on collar--about 1/2 inch apart--

Snap a small glow stick--very available through fishing stores or online, every night and slip through their band loops--it prevents anyone, or other pets from running into them and scaring them at night.

We use this with our elderly dog and he has recovered some of his spirit after several encounters by us at night going to and from the restroom...

Bounce This Along . . .

Gertrude and Ed Syx

My mail carrier told me that the US Postal service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellow-jackets away. I Use them all the time when
playing baseball and soccer. I use it when I am working outside. It really works.
The yellow jackets just veer around you.

1. All this time you've just been putting Bounce in the
dryer! It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels mice.

2. Spread sheets around foundation areas, or in trailers, or cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle.

3 It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too often.

4. It repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.

5. Eliminate static electricity from your television (or
computer) screen.

6. Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.

7. Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of Bounce.

8. To freshen the air in your home - Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang in the closet.

9. Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner.

10. Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew.

11. Prevent musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing.

12. To freshen the air in your car - Place a
sheet of Bounce under the front seat.

13. Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food and the pan.

14. Eliminate odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.

15. Collect cat hair Rubbing the area with a sheet of
Bounce will magnetically attract all the loose hairs.

16. Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling.

17. Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth.

18. Eliminate odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.

19. Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight.

20. Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away.

21. Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. It will keep them smelling fresh.

Quick, BOUNCE this along to your friends, they will be glad to hear these hints!

With all the talk about "Made in China" the stats on the imports from China is somewhere I've heard, around the 80% mark...

As we hurt financially, we buy the cheapest we can to make ends meet--but every time we buy "Made in China" products, we are hurting our own homegrown folks and forcing more and more little businesses to close, and more and more big companies to move out of country--

I say, take that extra 10 minutes in every store, on every web page, in every catalog, and check to see if you can buy American instead...that goes for swap meets and flea markets too--a favorite site for selling "cheap" products.

Link below is for a discovery channel tv show website that has a short list of American products:
