American Legion Ambulance and Calaveras County.

Going to try keeping this civil but as time goes, who knows what will happen.

Let’s try to stay away from unnecessary debate that just become smokescreens in situations like this.

American Ambulance has and looks to continue cutting back service in Calaveras County.

American Legion reduces service

Let’s start with some questions that deserve straight answers. If we can do that we can get the true picture.

Some of the questions could be answered if some simple information were available on the web site Mountain-Valley EMS Home The site seems out of date and the information is lacking or non existent. The latest report is for 2004

First off.

In an article Ambulance company wins board's vote Published: April 14, 2005 by the Union Democrat it was stated,

"Lennox noted American Legion has reduced its response times from 13 minutes to 10 minutes across Amador County, while call numbers have gone up 15 percent."

"Lennox said he expects to also reduce average response times in Calaveras County".

Did that in fact happen in Calaveras County. Who has the numbers and when can the public see them?

Another statement was

"American Legion will provide seven ambulances — including an off-road ambulance — across the county. Posts will include Valley Springs, San Andreas, Angels Camp, West Point, Murphys and Mokelumne Hill. "

What are those numbers now?

Another passage says

"Yesterday's selection capped a controversial three-year study by the agency, Calaveras County residents and county officials. Narrowing the field of emergency ambulance providers is supposed to create more efficient, better service."

"It also forces two longtime Calaveras County ambulance companies to stop providing emergency response. San Andreas Ambulance and Valley Springs Ambulance can still provide non-emergency services. "

And knowing that,

"The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors unanimously supported Mountain Valley's selection process Monday, in advance of the vote."

"Claudino defended his views at yesterday's meeting. "

"This (selection process) is not about a popularity contest," he said. "It's about trying to create some stability in ambulance service in Calaveras County."

The question is. What is the status now?

Medic service pared down Published: September 27, 2006

This was near the beginning. Ambulance change approaching Published: June 15, 2005

"The goal in narrowing the field of emergency ambulance providers is more efficient service, but it also forces two longtime Calaveras County ambulance companies — San Andreas Ambulance and Valley Springs Ambulance — to stop providing emergency response." ( This gave exclusivity to American Ambulance. Some would call it a monopoly.)

So the question, Are we better off now then we were, becomes important as we see that American Ambulance wants to cut back on service that was originally agreed on.

I think we can start with that question and if we can get some answers we can have a better understanding of what has happened and what may happen. More importantly, Why it is happening.

Nothing that will be said is meant to cast dispersions on those medical professionals that operate the ambulances in Calaveras County. This is a management issue that is happening due to decisions made a few years ago by those we like to think act in the best interest of the public.

We will try to get the data needed so the public can see for themselves what was, what is, and what may yet come to be.

More to follow.
