Can you imagine a better place for the good people of Copperopolis to gather than the Historic Armory on Main Street (O’Byrnes Ferry Rd)? Probably not, seeing how even Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) once came to town to attend a Military Ball being held in the grand old building. Inside, the same Guard Flag saluted in 1865 during the Civil War still keeps a watchful eye on the goings on from a perch above the old brick doorways. The disastrous fire of 1867 changed Copperopolis forever. Over 130 years later we have not forgotten the historic buildings and artifacts we lost in that fire.

Today our Fire Department saves more than historic buildings and artifacts; it saves lives and protects us from dangers unknown to our forefathers. Biohazard and terrorism are an example of new words added to every fireman’s vocabulary in recent years. With the advancements in technology and the dedication of our Firemen to keep us safe, they are engaged in ongoing rigorous training to have the ability to protect us from these new threats and also come to our aid in case of heart failure using a portable Automatic External Defibrillator or in case of serious injury they can aid our breathing using a portable Suction Unit. Every Fireman on the payroll is a Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

But who answers the call when our Firemen need help? The Volunteer’s – every time. The Volunteer Fire Department of Copperopolis is made up of our neighbors who freely give their time to aid the Firemen on every call that comes in. They keep their equipment in their vehicles for fast response to a call, a call that can come at any hour of the day or night. A pager alerts them they are needed. A pager they keep with them 24-7. The Volunteer’s keep up with the latest life saving and fire fighting procedures during training sessions held the first and third Thursday of every month year-round. You may not know this but you have friends and neighbors at the Copper Fire Department, friends and neighbors that will be there when you need them.

Hope to see you there!
